Midwives supported nearly 10% of the births in Canada in 2015-2016.

The rates of midwifery-assisted birth varies from province to province to territory. Currently, British Columbia leads the country in highest percentage of midwifery-assisted births (21%) and Ontario leads in total number of midwifery-assisted births (21,224 per year). Please note that midwifery-assisted births refers to births in which the midwife was the primary health care provider for at least the majority of the pregnancy and birth.
