The Innu Midwifery Program aims to return Innu midwives to the Labrador Innu communities, Sheshatshiu and Natuashish, drawing on Innu Elders\u2019 knowledge of Innu birthing practices, to support the training of Innu midwives using a culturally specific, hands-on, and individually paced learning approach. Restoring midwifery to the Innu communities will result in Innu babies being born into Innu hands on Innu lands, fostering a greater connection to the land and culture, continuation of cultural practices and culturally safe care, and empowering individuals in the context of their childbearing experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What We Offer:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flexible and competitive contract<\/li>\n<li>Furnished housing provided (small beach house)<\/li>\n<li>Paid travel costs<\/li>\n<li>Living allowance provided<\/li>\n<li>Midwife registration costs reimbursed<\/li>\n<li>Professional liability insurance with HIROC covered<\/li>\n<li>Transportation available<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About the Position:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Working four to six weeks at a time with the Innu Midwifery Program, the incumbent midwife will be providing community-based midwifery care, primarily being a clinical preceptor to the Innu Student Midwives. The midwifery practice includes the provision of<\/p>\n<p>community-based prenatal and postpartum care. At this time, hospital privileges at the Labrador Health Centre in Goose Bay are not available and the midwifery team will accompany clients in labour in hospital. The Innu Midwifery Program is a new midwifery practice and education program, and the incumbent will support the integration of community-based midwifery services into existing healthcare services currently available to Innu communities in Labrador. The overarching function of this position is to support Innu-led and culturally safe midwifery practice and program integration that will contribute to the improvement of maternal child health outcomes in Sheshatshiu and Natuashish.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Successful completion of a recognized midwifery education program or Indigenous midwifery education pathway approved by the College of Midwives of Newfoundland and Labrador (CMNL) and Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals (NLCHP).<\/li>\n<li>Eligible for registration as a Midwife with the NLCHP and the CMNL.<\/li>\n<li>A minimum of three (3) years of working as a Midwife in Canada including experience with Indigenous clients and communities.<\/li>\n<li>Strong knowledge of Indigenous health, cultural safety, and ability to work closely with diverse Indigenous communities and Nations.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated experience as a clinical midwifery preceptor to guide and support Innu Student Midwives during their clinical placements.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work independently and in collaboration with the program team and Innu Student Midwives.<\/li>\n<li>High degree of flexibility, resourcefulness, and adaptability.<\/li>\n<li>Organized, attention to details and follow through required.<\/li>\n<li>Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint), as well as Internet applications and other information technology.<\/li>\n<li>A valid Driver\u2019s license.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional Skills:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience with implementation of Indigenous Midwifery services.<\/li>\n<li>Experience working in community-based projects, research, or another related field.<\/li>\n<li>Midwifery teaching experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Personal Suitability:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Excellent people skills, communication, and commitment to collaborating with diverse stakeholder groups and individuals.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of the history of Indigenous colonialism and the importance of reconciliation to build a more just Canada that addresses historical wrongs and systemic inequalities faced by Indigenous peoples.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of Indigenous teachings and practices, and the way in which culture and community impact the experience of health care.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to demonstrate empathy, be mindful and aware of the ongoing effects of colonization.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.<\/li>\n<li>Motivation to return as a locum several times per year and hand over practice to other locum midwives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How to Apply:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
