Midwife Owner or Manager

Website Cariboo Midwives

Cariboo Midwives is looking for a new Registered Midwife owner or manager. Located in beautiful, affordable Williams Lake outdoor recreation opportunities abound in this friendly community with a big heart.
Co-founded in 2020 by RM Krista Hamblin and RM Megan Corbett as the first midwifery practice in the Cariboo Region, the model of care is very popular and serves a vast demographic area of immensely grateful clientele. Krista has since moved, and the practice currently functions of a team of two with Megan Corbett as Registered Midwife and Owner and Katie Donahue as New Registrant.  Katie is staring a maternity leave March 2023. For personal and family reasons Megan is planning to move from Williams Lake in summer 2023, which has prompted this attempt to recruit a midwife willing to “build-your-own-adventure”. This is a perfect opportunity to try out practice management to slide into this ready-to-go high functioning practice and customize it to suit your needs. Uniquely, the posting comes with housing with a cozy two-bedroom suite with a massive fenced backyard a short 12 steps down from the exterior of the clinic. It is also a perfect opportunity to break into the housing market at the same time as ideally, Megan would be able to sell the house and practice together for one set price. For the right candidate who is not looking for a purchase Megan would consider renting the space.
The practice is currently thriving in a very functional, beautiful office on the top floor of a house on a residential street in Williams Lake about 5 minutes drive from the hospital. It is currently registered as a home-based business, although this is not evident to clientele. The clinic is in the upstairs, a 935 square foot legally separate two bedroom, one bath suite that is renovated to be a very functional professional clinic. A 10 foot retaining wall separates the front from the back yard so the lower two bedroom, one bath 854 square foot unit where Megan currently lives is completely set apart from the clinic. The basement suite is a walk-in South facing unit with huge daylight windows and a large fenced backyard with alley access, two parking spaces and two storage sheds. The basement is also newly renovated with updated bathroom, flooring, drywall ceiling, upgraded electrical, modern light fixtures, and a bright newly painted kitchen.
Our relationships with our obstetric and pediatric consultants at Cariboo Memorial Hospital are excellent. We work in a 3B facility with 24/7 pediatric and obstetric call and care for planned deliveries locally > 35 weeks.  We have a lovely team of nurses who are mostly newer which means that they are receptive to the model of care and this has allowed us to ‘build our own model’ within the hospital space. Our site is building a brand new single-room model maternity unit with nice big labour tubs, and in the meantime, we have a smaller outdated unit with really lovely and capable people working in it. We enjoy 1-1 nursing support and trust our nursing colleagues to perform many of our initial assessments etc. We have an Out-of-Hospital birth rate currently around 10%. We work with a handful of RNs and paramedics who provide second attendant for our OOH births.
We function in the role of surgical assist for our clients, so certification for surgical assist in obstetrics, or willingness to pursue the same is requested of the applicant. Similarly, we are encouraged to work in full scope so completion, or willingness to certify in, Induction and Augmentation competency for midwives is required.
We use Accuro EMR which is quite intuitive and customizable. We have a lovely part-time administrator who is very efficient, but is planning to leave late in the summer 2023 to pursue a midwifery education herself. We have already had applicants expressing interest in the admin position, so are willing to help train a replacement admin if this suits your vision. Our caseload, though slightly variable month to month, supports two midwives comfortably and with a consistent presence and advertising could be expanded to support a team of 3. Once Katie is finished her maternity leave she may be interested to returning to work with a new practice partner and this could be negotiated with her directly. Solo practice is also an option if you want to keep it simple, and there is a team of 3 GPs very competent and passionate about primary maternity care. Relationships and trust have been built over the past 2 years so the foundation is laid for negotiating on-call back up support and coverage for occasional days off.
We serve a community of 60,000 residents spanning from the South East to 100 Mile House, out West up to Bella Coola, and Soda Creek/McLeese Lake to the North. Over 20% of Williams Lake residents identify as indigenous.
Start date is negotiable, and would be welcomed anytime from March 2023 as ideally some overlap would be available to orientate you to the community and facilitate handing over the management of the practice. With signing a contract, we would be willing to continue building a caseload for you to assume July 2023 if that is your wish.
The sky is the limit with possibilities for this position. Are you interested, but will be a New Registrant? Please get in touch with us as will the support of the MABC and current practice partners we could probably arrange a supervision plan for you.
We are proud of this beautiful practice with so much potential that we have built from the ground up, and would love to see the population of Williams Lake continue to receive high quality Midwifery Care. We are having some professional pictures of the clinical and living space arranged and these will be available for your viewing by then end of 2022.
Please respond with interest, questions to
We would love to speak with you about your individual situation and see if this is a community where you would like to bring your expertise.
Warm regards, Megan Corbett, RM
