The Island Health Department of Midwifery has full-time opportunities for Registered Midwives to join 42 other midwives practicing in greater Victoria.
Victoria Midwives are currently involved in 32% of the total births in the Capital Region and the home birth rate is approximately 15%. Midwives have admitting privileges at the Victoria General Hospital, a medium sized tertiary care center for Vancouver Island, which has approximately 3,000 deliveries per year.
The GEO 4 Department of Midwifery is well-integrated within the Island Health medical staff structure. Midwives are active members of the multi-disciplinary perinatal care teams and have been instrumental in affecting how maternity care services are delivered in the region.
Midwives in B.C. are required to practice in both the home and hospital settings. They are independent practitioners with their own practices in the community.
The successful applicants must be eligible to obtain full licensure with the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives and demonstrate suitable experience and training.
