Nova Scotia Health Authority
Highland Community Midwives is looking for a registered midwife. We are located in beautiful Antigonish, Nova Scotia and have our clinic and hospital births at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital. We provide care to clients throughout Antigonish and Guysborough counties, as well as many parts of Cape Breton Island. We have outreach clinics in various locations in our catchment area and serve a diverse rural population.
Antigonish, the “Highland Heart of Nova Scotia”, is a small university town in a rural community, close to many beautiful parks and beaches- close enough that you can enjoy them even while on call! There is a strong sense of community in the town and county, with a busy farmers market, vibrant art/music scene and plenty of family-friendly activities throughout the year. Antigonish is located approximately 2 hours away from the city of Halifax.
Highland Community Midwives is a team of 4 midwives, employed by Nova Scotia Health, and we practice in a shared care model. There is a midwife and a backup midwife oncall together for home births/sleep relief/extra support. We strive to support a work-life balance, and aim for 7-10 fully off days/month where you are not oncall/in clinic. We keep a moderate caseload of ~10 clients/month for the team as we cover a lot of distance doing home visits in our catchment area. Home birth numbers have increased over the past couple years, but most clients opt for hospital births in our area. We have supportive management and strong collaborative relationships with other health care providers/staff at our hospital. In addition to 4 weeks vacation/year, there are comprehensive health benefits, pension and oncall/evening/weekend premiums.
We are looking for an experienced midwife, but are open to a new registrant. An ideal candidate would be a team player, have solid clinical skills, have experience working with diverse populations, be comfortable with driving long distances, be interested in the rural east coast lifestyle and be keen to contribute to the midwifery growth and promotion in Nova Scotia.
