Island Health’s Department of Midwifery is seeking 1 full-time  Registered Midwife to provide services in the Oceanside region of Vancouver Island. The focus of this position will be to provide care for the underserved geographic areas of the Qualicum Beach, Parksville and outlying communities including Nanoose Bay, Coombs, Errington, French Creek, Bowser, Deep Bay, Qualicum Bay.

The successful midwife will be invited to apply for privileges at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH).  NRGH is a 224 acute-bed regional referral hospital, enjoys a new perinatal unit with single room maternity care and Level II Special Care Nursing offering 1,200 deliveries per year with RMs currently doing 30% of these births. 

The Vancouver Island Department of Midwifery is well integrated within the health authority medical staff structure. The midwives are actively involved members of the multi-disciplinary perinatal care teams and have been instrumental in affecting how maternity care services are delivered in the region.

The successful applicant will be eligible to obtain full licensure with the B.C. College of Midwives and demonstrate suitable experience and training.

Midwives in B.C. are required to practice in both the home and hospital settings. They are independent practitioners with their own practices in the community and have admitting privileges at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

These positions are covered by the Provincial Health Officer’s Expanded Public Health Order requiring mandatory COVID-19 vaccination for all health care workers effective October 26, 2021, thus requiring all Medical Staff to be fully vaccinated to work in Island Health facilities.
