Advancing Midwifery in Canada: Reflecting on Progress and Looking to the Future Under Prime Minister Carney

With the swearing-in of Mark Carney as Canada’s 24th prime minister, we look to the future as we reflect on the progress made for midwifery under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s leadership.

His tenure brought historic federal recognition of midwifery, with midwives explicitly mentioned in the federal budget for the first time and the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program expanded to include midwives—we now look forward to its full implementation under the new government. Changes to the Canada Health Act Services Policy have also reinforced the importance of equitable access to healthcare services, including midwifery.

The Canadian Association of Midwives values the productive collaboration we have had with the federal government. We are eager to continue this work under Prime Minister Carney’s leadership, and with new Minister of Health Kamal Khera, to further strengthen and expand midwifery care across the country.
