Website Strathcona Midwifery
Strathcona Midwifery’s Dandelion team is looking for another midwife (or 2!) to join us.
We are open to a start date as early as February 2024 but know that is soon, we’ll keep the posting open until we find the right fit!
Strathcona Midwifery is a busy midwifery practice located in Chinatown in Vancouver, BC, on the unceded and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm , Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh Nations. Our practice has a long history of caring for clients who have typically been de-prioritized by the medical system.
There are 4 teams of midwives currently at Strathcona. There is a strong sense of belonging at the practice and a spirit of care and support between the teams.
The Dandelion team has a strong focus on caring for queer and trans clients as well as newcomers to Vancouver with precarious immigration status. We are actively working with the MABC, our hospitals and health authorities to create more access and sustainability for this community and the providers who serve them.
We are currently a team of 2 midwives and we book a caseload of 6-8 clients per month with a week on/week off schedule. Work life balance is important to us and we’re looking to expand our team and create a call schedule that allows for more balance. We work out of BC Women’s and St Paul’s Hospitals and have about a 30% home birth rate. We each take 2 months vacation per year, 2 weeks in the winter, 2 weeks in the spring and 1 month in the summer.
Our ideal candidate:
Has energy for the reproductive justice and community building work we do.
Has experience working with queer and trans clients.
Speaks Spanish, or is willing to learn.
Is okay to do some pro-bono work for uninsured clients.
Has experience with Oscar.
Has current privileges at BCWH or SPH (this is not absolutely necessary as we can provide temporary privileges).
Has a strong philosophy of informed choice and client-centred care.
Has excellent communication skills.
Is dedicated to building a supportive team rapport, and is willing to take on a share of team admin work.
Is willing to commit time and energy to the maintenance of the practice. This includes attending staff meetings, as well as tasks like website maintenance, admin support, small cleaning tasks, and community outreach.
The Practice:
We use Oscar.
The clinic is in Chinatown in a two-story well maintained medical office building with a pharmacy on the ground floor.
We have excellent admin support.
The practice is co-owned by midwives Carolyn Saunders and Cora Beitel and we strive to make decisions collectively.
