In a Changing World, Canada Can Lead on Maternal Health

In a recent op-ed for The Hill Times, CAM Executive Director Tonia Occhionero makes a strong case for Canada’s global leadership in maternal and reproductive health—particularly in crisis-affected regions like South Sudan.

With one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world—1,223 deaths per 100,000 live births compared to just 11 in Canada—South Sudan’s mothers face staggering odds. These deaths are largely preventable and driven by systemic barriers and limited access to reproductive health services.

Thanks to support from Global Affairs Canada, Canadian midwives are making a critical difference—supporting the development of the midwives who deliver life-saving care, Their work not only saves lives but also strengthens and transforms local health systems for long-term change.

The op-ed underscores the value of midwifery-led care. According to the World Health Organization, midwifery one of the most cost-effective strategies for improving maternal and newborn outcomes, empowering women and supporting community resilience
