The Fetal Health Surveillance Steering Committee has announced changes to FHS education in Canada, including a new online exam, the launch of a new FHS Refresher Course, plans to increase the capacity to deliver FHS education by developing instructor trainers, and new registration requirements for FHS Instructors.

The new education program is accredited and/or endorsed by the SOGC, CAPWHN, CAM and the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

New Online Exam

The new Fetal Health Surveillance exam has been online since June 1 and is free to access until September 1, 2018.  As of January 1, 2019, learners will be required to take the exam as a pre-requisite to the live 8-hour workshop.  The change to the Canadian Fetal Health Surveillance programming will permit more time for important learner interaction with fundamental concepts and case reviews during the workshop.  The online exam is available through the Final Evaluation tab in the Fundamentals of Fetal Health Surveillance Self-Learning Online Manual (UBC CPD portal).

Refresher Course

A new Fetal Health Surveillance Refresher course will be launched at the Canadian Association of Perinatal and Women’s Health Nurses in October 2018.  The workshop supports interprofessional teamwork and communication.

FHS Instructor Trainers

In order to increase the capacity to deliver FHS training, the Champlain Maternal Newborn Regional Program and Perinatal Services BC will be developing highly skilled FHS Instructors to train new instructors.

FHS Instructor Portal

Current and new FHS instructors will be required to renew their registration every three years.  At that time, they will pay a fee of $120, complete the FHS online exam, and show proof of teaching three in-person workshops over three-years.

For more information on developments in FHS education, please consult the Canadian Fetal Health Surveillance Steering Committee Newsletter.
