International Day of the Midwife: Dance in Support of Midwifery!

May 5th is International Day of the Midwife!  What better way to celebrate midwifery than to dance? CAM’S Third Annual DANCE FOR MIDWIFERY!

Why Dance!?

Midwives attend 10% of births in Canada but they are still unknown or misunderstood by many. They are primary health care providers during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period and yet many people do not realize that they have the choice to see a midwife instead of a doctor. We want a groundswell of support for midwifery so that everyone knows what a midwife can do!

The Dance

Midwives, supporters, associations, partners in Canada and around the world will be encouraged to dance in celebration of the tremendous work midwives do every day. Participants are asked to record their choreographed or spontaneous dance and uploaded the video to their social media accounts, the CAM FB page or sent to me directly. The video can be recorded with a phone, a tablet, or video camera. Dance! Dance for as short or long as you want, post the clip on your Instagram and FB and Twitter (Dont forget to tag CAM and other associations, orgs and friends) and then CHALLENGE THREE people in your network to do the same, and so on and so on.

The song choice for 2019 is: R.E.S.P.E.C.T from the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

Those who send to me or post before April 22, will be included in the final recap video that will be disseminated across social media channels on May 5. Your participation is greatly appreciated!. We had a great response in 2018, and would love to build on it in 2019.

The Statements

Also, in conjunction with Women Deliver in June, we ask that midwives, supporters, associations and sponsors communicate either via writing on white cards or devices,  a word, sentence or theme  that answers the question “What do midwives deliver”.  Folks can post this with the hashtags #MidwivesDeliver2019; #IDM2019.  These comments will be included in the video where possible, and uploaded to FB page and IG accounts.  We will also be sure to include whatever themes various associations are doing in 2019 while also tagging them.
